Elf-on-the-Shelf Ideas that will surprise and delight

So you’re debating whether or not to bring an Elf-on-the-shelf into your home. Your little one has been begging for the past two Christmases and you’re ready to cave. Well, if you’re ready for the commitment, and it WILL be for years to come. And you’re sure I can’t convince you to back out now while you still can! Then let’s dive right into it.

Firstly, in their original state the elves arms and legs can’t hold many positions as their simply stuffed. To remedy this, I threaded wire into their arms and legs using these steps.

Once that’s done your elf (or elves, because we adopted a few at the request of my daughter) will be able to do cartwheels if you so desired. So let’s get into my top ten list of elf-on-the-shelf ideas.

ELF-ON-THE-SHELF-IDEA NO.1 – “THE STICK UP

What you’ll need:

  • Your elf/elves
  • Twine
  • Tape
  • Toy soldiers or any other doll, figurine or toy animal
Good Luck guys! Whatever you do, DO NOT NEGOTIATE!

ELF-ON-THE-SHELF-IDEA NO.2- “THE Ho-Ho-Ho DISCO

It’s mannequin days and boogie nights for this crew. And I think they’ve made peace with the toy soldiers as they seem to be in on the action.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your elf/elves
  • An elf-on-the-shelf DJ set
  • Two dinner mints as turn tables
  • (optional) elf clothing
  • Toy soldiers, dolls, figurines or another other animal toy

ELF-ON-THE-SHELF-IDEA NO.3- “HIDE THE HALLOWEEN CANDY

These guys just can’t be trusted. But even with these images, taken by our indoor camera system, it’s difficult to tell who these masked bandits could be!

What you’ll need

Snowflake? Is that you?

ELF-ON-THE-SHELF-IDEA NO.4- “Lift de weights dem ova yuh head”

Managing these late night robberies requires a certain amount of physical fitness. And left up to their own devices, these Elves will make a gym out of any corner of your house.

What you’ll need

  • Your Elf/Elves
  • Other toys wishing to get a workout in (optional)
  • Marshmallows (regular and minis)
  • Toothpicks
  • Toilet paper (for folded towels)

note: I used two packs of Christmas cards as the “benches”. You can use any household item that sits at the right height.

And let’s not forget towel service, nothing but the best for our Elves.

ELF-ON-THE-SHELF-IDEA NO.5- “THE PHOTO SHOOT-I’M TOO SEXY FOR MY SHIRT’

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your elf/elves
  • Paper and crayons
  • A scissors to cut a hole for the arms and face
  • A camera

ELF-ON-THE-SHELF-IDEA NO.6- “KEEP CHRIST IN “CHRIST”-MAS”

With all of the fun of the Elves and Santa’s upcoming arrival, let’s not forget the true meaning of Christmas.

What you’ll need

  • Your Elf/Elves (you can choose whichever role they play in this scene)
  • Other toys to play the roles of the other nativity scene characters
  • Wrapping paper and twine to use as clothing for the wise men and shepherds
  • Animal figurines to add to the scene
  • Paper to cut crowns for the wise men and for the star.
  • Tape to stick the crowns
Use as many Christmas themed items as you can think of to add extras to the scene. Here I added a candy cane as a shepherd’s staff.

ELF-ON-THE-SHELF-IDEA NO.7 – “THE SKIING ACCENT”

Every mom needs a weekend to herself over the month of December. This was one such weekend for me. This little skiing accident allowed me two days rest, so I could be on my top Elf Game the following week 😉

What you’ll need:

  • Your elf/elves
  • Plaster of Paris kit. This requires some preparation. I set the kit around a few markers two nights before the great skiing accident. That gave the “casts’ enough time to dry and set aside. Once you cast them wide enough they’ll slip on like a boot.
  • Candy candy crutches
  • Toilet paper for arm slings

ELF-ON-THE-SHELF-IDEA NO.9- “SANTAS LITTLE HELPERS”

My son’s birthday falls in the month of December, so every year the Elves do something extra special to celebrate. It’s an Elf tradition!

What you’ll need:

These guys are great bakers!

ELF-ON-THE-SHELF-IDEA NO.10- “DOUGH ANGELS”

They’re missing the snow so these guys have grabbed the next best thing…..your bag of flour.

What you’ll need:

  • Your elf/elves
  • A bag of flour
It’s a messy job, but someone’s gotta do it.
